🐾 DOODLE SHOWDOWN

The dogs everyone grooms β€” finally get their own ring!

The Doodle Showdown is a fun, relaxed competition designed for newer groomers working with doodles, oodles, and poodle-mixes of every shape and size. This class rewards scissoring skills, clipper technique, cute pet trims, and practical styling that owners love and judges respect. 

Eligible dogs include:

Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, Cavapoos, Schnoodles, Maltipoos, and other poodle-mixes. 

Entry-Level Only Competition

This class is designed specifically for groomers who are new to the competition ring and want the chance to experience what it’s like to compete on the big stage β€” in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.

This division is not open to Intermediate or Open level competitors.

Entry-level competitors who have competed before are still welcome to participate; however, we strongly encourage returning competitors to consider entering our Salon Freestyle division as the next step in their competition journey.

RULES β€” Doodle Showdown

Coat Prep

  • Dogs must arrive bathed, dried, detangled, and fully brushed out.
  • No body pre-trim.
  • Feet/pads/sanitary permitted if necessary.

Allowed Techniques

  • Full-body clipping, scissoring, and blending
  • Guard combs, snap-on combs, and blades as appropriate
  • Head, muzzle, and ear shaping in any style suited to the dog

Encouraged

 Stylish, cute, balanced finishes

  • Clear transitions (neck, shoulder, hips)
  • Safe, pet-friendly styles that could realistically be maintained

Not Allowed

  • Extreme creative color
  • Extreme shaving that compromises safety or skin integrity
  • Fake enhancements, chalking, extensions, etc.

Judging Focus

  • Balance and proportion
  • Smooth clipper/scissor finish
  • Coat consistency and texture management
  • Suitability of style to the dog’s structure
  • Safety, handling, and comfort of the dog
  • Difficulty appropriate to a beginner-friendly class

Goal

Give doodle groomers a ring where their everyday skills truly count β€” and help newer competitors build confidence 

βœ‚οΈ DOUBLE COATED SHOWDOWN

A crowd-favorite coat type gets its own spotlight!

The Double Coated Showdown is designed for newer competitors who work with spitz, nordic, herding, and other double-coated breeds every day β€” and want to show what thoughtful trimming and coat preservation can really do.


This class focuses on shape, outline, balance, and coat care, rather than clip-offs or extreme makeovers. Think polished, tidy, and natural β€” with a little bit of ring-worthy flair. 

Eligible dogs include:

Pomeranian, Corgi, Sheltie, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Husky, Keeshond, Samoyed, German Shepherd, Chow Chow, mixed double-coats, and similar types.

This class is designed specifically for groomers who are new to the competition ring and want the chance to experience what it’s like to compete on the big stage β€” in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.

RULES β€” Double Coated Showdown

Coat Prep

  • Dogs must arrive bathed, dried, and fully brushed out.
  • Minimal pre-trimming allowed (feet/pads/sanitary only). 
  • No obvious pre-cut lines 

Allowed Techniques

  • Thinning/blending shears, scissors, carding, raking, hand-stripping on appropriate areas
  • Tidy shaping of pants, chest, underline, tail, neck, and outline
  • Light scissoring to refine silhouette

Not Allowed

  • Full body shave-downs or drastic clipper trims
  • Removing the natural double coat structure
  • Coloring, chalking, or decorative cosmetics (unless otherwise stated in show rules)

Judging Focus

  • Cleanliness & preparation
  • Coat preservation and appropriate technique
  • Balance, symmetry, and structure enhancement
  • Smoothness and polish of finish
  • Suitability to the breed/coat type
  • Overall presentation and teamwork between groomer and dog
     

Goal

 Celebrate groomers who respect the coat β€” and know how to make double coats shine without compromising them. 

🐩 TAG TEAM

Overview

The Tag Team Division is a two-person team grooming challenge focused on teamwork, timing, technique, and dramatic transformation. Each team consists of exactly two groomers working collaboratively on one dog. The goal is to complete a professional, creative, and skillful groom within the allotted time while adhering to all safety, handling, and show rules. 

Team Structure

 All Division A (Open) and Division B (Entry & Intermediate) competitors are welcome.

  • βœ”οΈ Each team must consist of two professional groomers.
  • βœ”οΈ Only one groomer may be actively working on the dog at a time for the majority of the competition.
  • βœ”οΈ  Teams make up can consist of competitors from all divisions Entry -> Open  
  • βœ”οΈ Teams must list both competitors at the time of entry. Substitutions can be made prior to show date. Substitutions are not permitted after check-in unless approved by the Contest Coordinator due to emergency. 

Timing & Rotation Breakdown

 Total Competition Time: 2 Hours 

  • Groomers will rotate every 15 minutes, with only one groomer working on the dog at a time
    Rotations will continue for the first 90 minutes of the competition
    During the final 30 minutes, both team members may work on the dog simultaneously
  • This format ensures equal working time for both team members while encouraging strategy, planning, and communication.

βœ”οΈ Groomer switches will be signaled by the judge or official contest timer
βœ”οΈ During single-groomer periods, the non-active groomer may remain at the workstation to assist but may not touch any tools.

Coat Prep Allowed

  • βœ”οΈ Dogs must arrive bathed, dried, detangled, and fully brushed out.
  • βœ”οΈ No body pre-trim
  • βœ”οΈ Feet/pads/sanitary - Clean Face permitted if necessary.

Grooming Rules

  • βœ”οΈ This is a Salon Freestyle–based class
  • βœ”οΈ Clippers, shears, thinning shears, and standard salon tools are permitted
  • βœ”οΈ Coloring and artistic enhancements ARE permitted
  • βœ”οΈ Creative expression is encouraged while maintaining professional grooming standards
  • βœ”οΈ All grooming must take place within the competition ring 
  •  πŸš« Unsafe handling, stressful techniques, or practices that compromise the dog’s comfort are grounds for penalty or disqualification. 

Creative Allowances

βœ”οΈ Creative grooming sprays, chalks, dyes, and decorative enhancements are allowed
βœ”οΈ Enhancements must be safe, pet-approved products
βœ”οΈ Finished work should still reflect salon-appropriate balance, cleanliness, and structure 

βœ‚οΈ MODEL DOG SHOWDOWN

Overview

 The VGS Live Model Dog Competition is designed to showcase scissoring skill, balance, style, and creativity β€” without the pressure of working on a live dog.

Competitors will groom a synthetic-coated model dog in the ring, during a timed session.
Grooms may be:

  • Purebred Breed Profile β€” inspired by traditional breed standards
     
  • Freestyle / Salon Style β€” a well-balanced, professional trim not tied to a specific breed
     

Both approaches are judged equally on technique, finish quality, and overall presentation.

Who May Enter

 All Division A (Open) and Division B (Entry & Intermediate) competitors are welcome.

  • One model dog per competitor. 
  • All work must be completed solely by the competitor during ring time. 
  • Divisions may be combined based on total number of entries.

Time Limit

Total Grooming Time: 2 hours

  • Competitors must stop immediately when time is called.
  • Working after time may result in point deductions or disqualification.
  • No helpers, handlers, or coaching during the competition.

Model Dog Requirements

  • Must be a commercially available, synthetic-coated mannequin dog. 
  • Coat must fully cover the model in its natural state (no missing panels or pre-cut sections). 
  • No taxidermy, real fur, or live-animal parts are allowed.
  • Starting condition checked at ring entry
     

If judges determine the model has been significantly pre-altered, penalties may apply.

Coat Prep Allowed

  • βœ”οΈ  Brushing and combing & light detangling 

Allowed

  • βœ”οΈ  Scissors, thinners, blenders, curved shears 
  • βœ”οΈ  Combs & brushes 
  • βœ”οΈ  Clippers (used only during ring time) 
  • βœ”οΈ  Finishing Sprays, light styling products
  • βœ”οΈ  Chalk / Powders in reasonable amounts

Not Allowed

  • Pre-scissoring prior to ring time
  • Clipper work of any kind prior to ring time
  • Carving or shaping the coat prior to ring time
  • Pre-blocked patterns or outlines prior to ring time
  • Cutting into or altering the plastic structure
  • Heavy adhesives or sticky substances
  • Products that stain the ring or other compeitor's dogs


If excessive pre-work is discovered, judges may deduct points or move the entry to β€œExhibition Only.” 

βœ‚οΈ MODEL DOG - CREATIVE CANINE COUTURE

Competitors bring a fully completed groomed model dog to present for judging.

 The Creative Canine Couture contest celebrates imagination, artistry, and grooming skill.
Competitors bring a fully completed groomed model dog to present for judging.


This contest is focused on creative, abstract, and stylistic grooming, showcasing artistic expression on a model dog canvas.

Who May Enter

 All Division A (Open) and Division B (Entry & Intermediate) competitors are welcome.

  • This is one class with all  level competitors competing together
  • One entry per competitor. 
  • All work must be completed solely by the competitor prior to show. 
  • Submissions will be taken begging at show start time, and will end at 10:00 AM Sunday March 29th

Class Focus

  • This class is creative & abstract β€” judges will reward originality, concept, and execution. 
  • Entries should be stylistic and safe; the intent is visible artistic expression. 
  • Not limited to realism or breed standards.


Examples of Creative Concepts

  • Character themes
  • Sculptural designs
  • Color accents (pet-safe products)
  • Pattern and texture effects
  • Fashion or narrative inspiration

*These ideas are examples only β€” not specific judging criteria

CHECK-IN & PRESENTATION

  •  Competitors must check in at the assigned time and present their finished model dog. 
  •  Models should arrive in a protective case, box, or cover.
  •  Products, sprays, accessories, and decorative items should be safe and easily removed for judge inspection (if requested). 

Allowed

  • βœ”οΈ  Scissoring, shaping, clipping 
  • βœ”οΈ  Safe, non-toxic color products  
  • βœ”οΈ  Textures, patterning techniques 
  • βœ”οΈ  Accessories (stands, collars, ribbons) that do NOT damage the model 
  • βœ”οΈ  Light sprays for hold and polish 

Not Allowed

  • 🚫  Sharp objects that alter the mannequin structure 
  • 🚫  Hazardous materials 
  • 🚫 Anything unsafe or unable to be removed for judging 

🐩 CREATIVE PRE-GROOM

Overview

The Creative Pre-Groom is a fun, artistic special contest designed to highlight creative grooming, color application, styling, and presentation in a relaxed, welcoming environment.


This is a pre-groomed class, meaning the majority of grooming, design, and creative work must be completed prior to the competition check in. Judging focuses on overall creativity, technical execution, and final presentation.

Who May Enter

All Division A (Open) and Division B (Entry & Intermediate) competitors are welcome. 

  • This class is ideal for first-time creative competitors as well as experienced groomers wishing to showcase artistic work 
  • Divisions may be combined based on total number of entries.
  • Space is limited; advance registration is required

Time & Format

3:30 PM Check-In & Prop Set Up
Competitors must check in during the designated window with dogs fully finished. 

4:00 PM Pre-Judging Begins

Judges will evaluate the groom up close prior to presentations. 

4:30 PM Presentation Time

Each competitor will be allotted up to 2 minutes for presentation. Order will be assigned at check-in. 

5:15 PM Awards

Dog Requirements

  • βœ”οΈ  Dogs must be clean, dry, and fully pre-groomed prior to check-in 
  • βœ”οΈ  Dogs Must be on good health and suitable for creative grooming 
  • βœ”οΈ  Dogs must tolerate handling, props, and presentation safely and calmly 
  • 🚫 Dogs showing signs of stress or discomfort may be excused at the judges’ discretion

Grooming & Design Requirements

  • All major grooming and creative work must be completed before check-in 
  • Allowed techniques include: 
    • βœ”οΈ Creative scissoring and carving 
    • βœ”οΈ Coloring, dyeing, chalking, and artistic enhancements 
    • βœ”οΈ Creative styling, sculpting, and finishing 
  • Minor touch-ups (brushing, light scissoring, product refinement) may be permitted at check-in at judges’ discretion 
  • 🚫 No dryers or electrical equipment are permitted during the contest or presentation period

Props, Costumes & Presentation

  • Props, costumes, and accessories are encouraged to support the theme 
  • Maximum footprint: 5’ x 5’ 
    • Exceeding this space may result in disqualification 
  • Props must be: 
    • Stable and self-supporting 
    • Safe for the dog, handler, judges, and venue 
  • No heavy or restrictive objects may be attached to the dog 
  • Music is permitted for presentation (competitors must provide their own music)

Prohibited Items

For safety and venue compliance, the following are not permitted:

  • 🚫  Smoke, fog, confetti, glitter throw, streamers, flames, or explosives 
  • 🚫  Toxic, permanent, or non-pet-safe products 
  • 🚫  Non-water-soluble glues or adhesives 
  • 🚫  Tape or fasteners that pull coat or skin 
  • 🚫  Any prop or accessory deemed unsafe by judges or show management
